View of the Port of Calcutta from Fort William.

Nicholls, Charles George (active 1792-1818).

Stamped in lower left 'superfine London board'. Pencil on paper, damage in top right, restored. 240 x 330 mm. (9.5 x 13ins). 1800.

Nicholls arrived in Calcutta somewhere between 1792 and 1796. In 1799 he became a draughtsman in the Office of the Surveyor General, surveying Orissa in 1802 and returning to England in 1815.

A similar pencil, pen, ink and watercolour version of this picture was sold at Christie's, Visions of India sale, lot 52 on 17 June 1998. A closely related scene was included in James Baillie Fraser's Views of Calcutta (1824).

The India Office Collection at the British Library possesses a watercolour by Nicholls with the inscription on its mount, 'Bridge over the River Barna at Benares'.
